General voice issue

Jeff Kelley
It appears that many grids have been missing voice for days.

Any information about estimated time of return (if any) ?

Thanks.

Re: General voice issue

Hi Jeff

I sent them an email yesterday and received this answer:

-----------------------
Thank you for your patience. I have just received an update. We’ve isolated
the issue and our Ops Team is working on upgrading our infrastructure. We
are expecting systems to be coming back over the next few days with a
target completion time of mid next week. Until finished connection/transmission
will be in an intermittent state. We apologize for the delay.

Re: General voice issue

Jeff Kelley

Thanks Nick.

We knew for the beginning that relying on a  service that may be
suspended or discontinued at any time was a weakness.

We use an external Mumble server in the meantime, but this is a less
than optimal solution. Visitors are instructed to install a Mumble
client and audio settings may turn hairy.

If anybody interested, setting up a Mumble server (murmurd) on a
Linux box is a 5-minute job.

We've had this issue with voice also on our grid.

I've received the same response when sending them a support request about
it.

Lets hope it will get operational again soon.

Hello all,

I've just received a notice that voice capabilities has returned. Please
note that their servers addresses probably changed.

Thanks,
Asaff

It's not trivial to install and configure a FreeSwitch server.

I've tried it and spent many hours on getting it to work. I've managed to
get to a point where everyone inworld could see the white dot over their
own heads but not over others standing next to them.

Eventually we've decided that we prefer to use Vivox with its limitations
for the moment.

It's still less trivial to compile a Whisper region module and a
voice plugin in three flavors (Win, Mac, Linux) along with a plugin
switcher. There are a number of repos with the region module, but the
plugin source seems out is reach forever, except may be an old
Windows binary. The Firstorrm project dismissed the idea five years
ago:
https://jira.phoenixviewer.com/browse/FIRE-11682

I'm making my way in voice alternatives, updating the documentation
where I can.

Hi all,

I recieved an email from Vivox that the voice is working again.
I cheked, and found that I had to restart all my islands, before it worked
again. They all have to reconnect to the new vivox.
You don't have to restart Robust, just the islands.

Have a great weekend.
