OpenSim 0.6.8-binaries startup issue

Robert Klein
This post has NOT been accepted by the mailing list yet.
I have searched around and could not find this particular issue so hoping someone can help me. I grabbed the 0.6.8-binaries off the opensimulator.org home page, unzipped them, ran OpenSim.exe and I get the following:

2010-03-01 07:52:59,615 INFO  - OpenSim.Region.Physics.Manager.PhysicsPluginManager [PHYSICS]: creating OpenDynamicsEngine

Re: OpenSim 0.6.8-binaries startup issue

Chris Kennedy-2
Not sure, but from the looks of the error message it seems to me that it
can't find the ODE plugin. If you look in the Physics folder under bin
do you see the OpenSim.Region.Physics.OdePlugin.dll, and
OpenSim.Region.Physics.OdePlugin.dll.mdb files?

If not you should be able to find them in the binaries zip file.

Not sure what else to suggest to be honest though o_O

Best of luck!

Are you running 64bit? If so you need to run OpenSim.32BitLaunch.exe as
the current ODE is 32bit only.

Adelle.

Re: OpenSim 0.6.8-binaries startup issue

I am trying to run it on a Windows 2008 Server virtual machine. Up until now I have not had any issues running OpenSim on this image. I can run this version of OpenSim on all three of my other virtual machines (WindowsXP, Ubuntu 9.04, Windows 7). It definitely is an ODE problem.

I havent run VM and opensim b4 but im courious about what happens when you try a different physics eng other than ODE. It might help to sort it out some. My other thought would be a .net conflict of sometype. Mono has had them in the passed and that error looks alot like one i have seen under mono.(hit a limmit).

Sometimes there can also be errors that have nothing todo with it that go un-caught as an exception.
But i have never run it in the way you are so its just guessing on my part.

One other thought came to me and that is the op system is hiding the file or folder from the loader. Server level has alot of tricky stuff dealing with folder and file access rights. Also if a file is allowed to be run or called.
Just a thought.

I can run the basic physics without a problem. Just not ODE. Yeah I suspect it is a file permissions problem of some kind, Windows 2008 Server can drive me crazy with all the security layers it throws right in your face all the time. I will check the perms on the ODE related dlls and such. Again I am just running this straight from the binaries on the opensimulator home page without any modifications to anything.

What made me think of that was when a caught SERVER.. I ran into all kida wierd stuff when trying it on 2005 server. The binarys im shure are fine and are usualy well tested. I doubt anything i learned trying it in 2005 server would be of any use for 2008 server + VM. But sounds more like whats going on there than anything else.
Be intresting to know what you find out though

Did a few more tests with the other physics engines and checked the perms on the entire Physics folder and contents, all is correct but ODE will not run. I tried 0.6.6 and it works fine and wanted to try 0.6.7 but can't find it anywhere. Anyone know where it went?

Robert, you can find all the old released versions at

http://dist.opensimulator.org/

(I'll put a link on the download page).

I'm rather surprised that ODE stopped working for you after 0.6.6.  I would have thought that if it worked before it would still work.  Unfortunately, I'm not an ODE expert.

Re: OpenSim 0.6.8-binaries startup issue

Robert Klein
Hey Justin,

I have a fairly beefy ESXi server running all sorts of virtual machines and ODE (0.6.8) is fine on them except Windows 2008. ODE probably runs fine on a hardware Windows 2008 server just not my virtual. Thanks for the link to the distros. OpenSim guarantees never being bored right? :)
