Region handshake issue

Matthew Sable
I am working on an Opensim server at a university.  We have been given
a static IP for the server machine.  We can verify that the server can
be accessed from outside the campus because we can telnet to the
address and we can access a website from that address.  The
"Regions.ini" file has "0.0.0.0" as the internal IP and the static IP
as the external IP.  We use port 9000 and that is also set up in
"Regions.ini."  On campus, we can log in using the Hippo Viewer just
fine.  Outside of campus, login hangs at "Region Handshake."  The
server uses Windows Server 2008 with exceptions in Windows firewall
for both TCP and UDP for port 9000.  Even with the firewall turned
off, it still doesn't work.  Strangely, it did work once for about a
day.  I don't believe anything changed after that point.  Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Once you start opensim, what is the result when you enter your static
IP and port 9000 using:

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

from outside the university domain? Or you can test from the command
line on an *nix box as follows:

nc -zv your-static-ip 9000

-p

Hanging at region handshake is a udp issue usually caused by the port being blocked for that protocol.
One other potential reason i have run into into is when the machine has 2 network interfaces which allowed the udp to come in on the interface the  simulator was not set up on.
To verify udp connectivity, not just tcp, try the port checking tool from http://portforward.com .

to ask the obvious, check all levels of firewall in your setup. In
our University we have the machine firewall, a departmental (the
toughest controlled) and a university level one.

For a standalone port 9000 must be open (by default for one region
and the sim services)

For grids its usual to have 8002 for the grid services and
9000...9xxx for one port for eaxch region you are usiong.. the prots
are set in te region.ini files.

It says the port is open.  I've taken awhile to respond because the
problem seems like its intermittent.  It's been working for a couple
days but does not work today.  A view of the logs suggest that clients
are unable to respond back in the region handshake process.

Re: Region handshake issue

Karen Palen
I too have been tracking an intermittent bug which simply drops the response somehow.

Restarting OpenSim seems to fix the problem, but I have not yet succeeded in generating a consistent pattern to make it happen.

Any ideas would be welcomed!

Re: Region handshake issue

Karen Palen
At the moment I would just like confirmation that it is a real bug and not something dumb that *I* have done! LOL

Once it is reproducible then a mantis and a fix will follow ...

Checking my OpenSIm screen this morning I noticed several such incidents, but they all seemed to recover by themselves. O maybe they just dumped the user - who knows?
