Voice a key issue for educators migration from SL to OS

aiaustin
The one issue I would identify as a key one that needs improvement in
Opensim to allow educators to move their work onto Opensim is to
ensure we get a really good quality and reasonably scalable voice
solution.  Vivox does work very well in Second Life.  Freeswitch is
not a good enough quality replacement  yet in OS I think.  Mumble is
coming along but we have not yet tested that to see if it meets the
sort of typical educational collaboration and meetings voice needs.

Some Dutch folks tested Mumble for voice quality early this year, they
had quite hard requirements 'cause were evaluating options for language
education (and considering realXtend), and AFAIK found it adequate.
Dunno if they have actually started using it since or what happened.

For my ears Skype has still sounded still better, but Mumble pretty good
too .. just when have used it in meetings etc., haven't done proper
evaluations myself.

You may be interested in Whisper, the Mumble integration for OpenSim that vComm have produced.  I wrote it up here http://blog.knowsense.co.uk/blog/_archives/2010/8/16/4604621.html - At Flying Island we use it several times a week for meetings and it is very good, stable and high quality.  I'd suggest on a par with Skype, and with proper speaker indication and lip sync integration with the SL client (or Imprudence)

Thanks Neil, I have been tracking the postings about Mumble
integration and it sounds a promising way to go.

We'd also like to try mumble, but are hoping that Unix is supported
since that is where all of our services (including OpenSim) run. The other
wish item is the use of the current viewer (2.0+)

Q about mumble: when people say "it runs on Windows only" does that
refer to the server-side or does it refer to the users' machines?

Re: Voice a key issue for educators migration from SL to OS

Robert L martin
As a sidebar to the whole Voice issue how many of the different
implimanations support
1 relay to an audio stream (ie everything said in voice goes to
http://openvoice.example.com:1337/)
2 some reliable and automated way to get a transcript of a given session

It has been in a somewhat snarky manner that Lindens love to do chats
and brown bag meetings by Voice since there is no real good way* to
record what has been said (so no proof)
and some folks may not have or want to use a headset.

Mumble shows up in synaptic for Ubuntu 10.4

mumble, mumble server and about 3 more packages are showing up for
installation. Ric

Mumble is cross-platform. But the Vivox replacement for the viewer is
Windows only. Here is a discussion thread about it ...

Re: Voice a key issue for educators migration from SL to OS

Paul Fishwick
Regarding the server side, if I am reading the correct forum,
Volker states on Sept. 12:

"....You will need a region module, MurmurVoice in order to set up the
OpenSim server. We are currently finishing it in order to get published
together with the client source. We had some delay due to other projects
but soon it will be available...."

Thus, it appears not ready for general deployment, but hopefully
soon. here is the thread for reference:

http://whisper.vcomm.ch/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4

If someone knows of any update since that post, let us know.

What Paul says seems to be true. I'm eager to try Mumble as a replacement to FreeSwitch. AFAIK, the opensim region module for the same is not available, yet. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
