trying to set up freeswitch

gregor.mendle
Hi!

I'm trying to set up freeswitch in a standalone grid plus a robust
server. I read in a forum that freeswitch has to be started first but
i got the following error:

[ERR] mod_xml_curl.c:304 Received HTTP error 0 trying to fetch
http://my.public.ip:9000/api/freeswitch-config
data: [hostname=my.public.ip&section=directory&tag_name=domain&key_name=name&key_value=192.168.0.101&Event-Name=GENERAL&Core-UUID=fdf724cf-f25d-4902-b106-d353379ae43a&FreeSWITCH-Hostname=my.public.ip&FreeSWITCH-IPv4=192.168.0.101&FreeSWITCH-IPv6=%3A%3A1&Event-Date-Local=2010-11-11%2023%3A28%3A22&Event-Date-GMT=Thu,%2011%20Nov%202010%2022%3A28%3A22%20GMT&Event-Date-Timestamp=1289514502690309&Event-Calling-File=switch_core.c&Event-Calling-Function=switch_load_network_lists&Event-Calling-Line-Number=1060&domain=192.168.0.101&purpose=network-list]

if i start first the sim end then freeswitch i got this other error:

[ERR] mod_xml_curl.c:301 Error Parsing Result!

the content of my xml_curl.conf.xml was copied and pasted from the wiki:

 1 <configuration name="xml_curl.conf" description="cURL XML Gateway">
 2  <bindings>
 3   <binding name="example">
 4    <param name="gateway-url"
value="http://my.public.ip:9000/api/freeswitch-config"

11    <param name="disable-100-continue" value="true"/>

FreeSwitch is tough to set up. :/

Keep at it, don't give up...   and it will work.

Encouragement is all that I can offer today.

If that's any consolation, I too am fighting with FreeSwitch :-/
I got as far as making it look like voice works. But then all avies seem to get different channels, so no one actually hears anyone else.

Hi,
You can safely ignore the first Http error since until the Sim is up, freeswitch won't get a response. But can you please post your OpenSim logs related to freeswitch to try and troubleshoot the "Error Parsing Result" error? Chances are, your OpenSim server does not respond with the proper xml response to freeswitch's dialplan and directory configuration requests.

Venkatesh

In case its helpful, we have FreeSwitch workings fine across 3
different Opensim.exe instances on separate hosts in a grid of 20
regions.  The Opensim Wiki page and Opensim.ini.example file was
altered as a result of our experience so look at that carefully for setup.

Additional notes that might help:

1. We established a simple OpenSim.exe on the SAME host as the
FreeSwitch.exe service and put a single simple island on that (we
called it "Talk") as some folks observed that FreeSwitch had problems
with connecting for its CONFIGURED server lin to another server, and
use THAT OpenSim.exe instance for the config setup with FreeSwitch..
not the main regions we run on other servers.

2. FreeSwitch provides service to all OpenSim.ex instances on any
servers you wish even though its only configured fro one.

3. There is one FreeSwitch channel per region, change regions and you
change channel.  So all users to talk must be on the same
region.  Plots on one region share the region channel we think.

4. You appear as one user in the SL Viewers, AL other users appear as
a single "user" with a coded name for the channel.

5. You must have voice enabled at the region, AND the plot
level.  This is a pain, as the default setting in OpenSim is that
PLOTS have voice turned off.  The standard viewers 1.23 and 2.x do
not allow you to turn this back on, so you must use a third party
viewer to turn on PLOT voice.  I have asked before that we change the
default setting when a plot is created to have this on by default (or
on if the region voice is on- which it is by default).

6. You definitely MUST start FreeSwitch.exe before the regions that
you want voice to work on. It works fine over restarts without
FreeSwitch being started again.

7. Rremember to configure for EXTERNALLY accessible IP
addressed.  Use IP numbers fro FreeSwitch... and if there are
192.168.x.x style local net addresses in there you will not get
FreeSwitch to work with external users.

8. There are some red errors on startup of FreeSwitch as noted by
gregor.. at least in our setup which appears to be related to a
missing config file that FreeSwitch tries to retrieve from OpenSim
(opensim-region-server-url:port/api/freeswitch-config) that is not in
the OpenSim setup... We have (safely?) ignored those without problems...

You can test voice on regions on the Openvue grid if you wish... The
Talk region is on same host as the FreeSwitch.exe service if other
regions give problems.  The server is only a dual core Pentium
Windows 32 bit OS machine so not that beefy remember, but has worked
for 4 way calls for us.

Does this mean that the OpenSim instance that is running on the same
machine as FreeSwitch (in your case "Talk") does not support voice?

No Diva, we have FreeSwitch working on ALL our regions as we set them
all to use the single server.  But to be safe we felt we should run a
simple single region OpenSim.exe on the same host as FreeSwitch as
well. I believe I did get it working without that, i.e. Freeswitch
was on a separate server top ALL our Opensim.exes.. but felt it safer
to have such a setup

We were using FreeSwitch 1.0.4 on Winodws Vista 32 bit OS for
Freeswitch and Opensi,.xex.

I put all this info as notes at http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Freeswitch_Module

I stand corrected.  Its more complicated and we could not get 1.0.4
working it seems.  I added notes on what we actually used on the Wiki...

We used Windows Vista 32 bit OS for the host for the FreeSwitch service.

Attempts to use the FreeSwitch 1.0.4 standard release failed. We have
not yet tested FreeSwitch 1.0.6 but will do so shortly and report here.

With help from Olish Newman of New World Grid, who uses FreeSwitch on
some of the regions on that grid, we use a precompiled version of
FreeSwitch built from sources 1.0 Trunk (13754M). A copy is available
as a .msi (Microsoft Windows installer) along with read me notes
already contributed to this Wiki page here...

I put all this info as notes in a section at the bottom
of  http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Freeswitch_Module

Hi Gregor,

I assume your freeswitch configuration in OpenSim.ini also refers to IP
address 99.99.99.99?

You say that is a public IP address. Is your server directly on the internet
or behind a NAT.

If you behind a NAT you possibly cannot use the public IP address for local
communications. You could test this by:

telnet 99.99.99.99 9000

and then see if you get the same response as when you do:

telnet localhost 9000

Regards,

Olli

We have now tested FreeSwitch 1.0.4 (Windows precompiled
distribution) and the latest 1.0.6 version built from source and both
work fine in the Openvue grid setup.  We will leave the latest 1.0.6
in place on our server for tests.

See notes to help others at:
http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Freeswitch_Module#Notes_from_Openvue_Grid_setup_for_FreeSwitch

We will track Mumble developments and work with others to test that
when the adaptor becomes available.

I have FreeSWITCH 1.0.4 running successfully with a multiple sim instances on WinXP and I would say if you are only trying to connect behind a firewall you should use the local IP in xml_curl.conf.xml and Opensim.ini and see if it works that way. I had it going that way and it worked fine, then did the port forwarding and NAT settings on our firewall to open up our sims outside. So far, the sims are accessible but not FreeSWITCH because I still have to figure out the correct ports to open for that. But with the public IP in xml_curl.conf.xml and in OPensim.ini ONLY in the freeswitch_service_server variable the voice DOES work internally.
@Ai, nice list of troubleshooting measures!
@Diva, now that is an interesting problem, separate channels in a region! Certainly make people feel alone together...

Hi Austin,

So according to your notes Freeswitch will not work if your server is behind
NAT, is that correct?

In other words, if you wish to have an internet accessible OpenSim instance
with Freeswitch you must ensure that it is on DMZ with the public IP as its'
"local" IP address and not behind a router carrying out the address
translation between public and private IP?

Regards,

Olli

I cannot be sure on that Olli.  But any port forwarding or
translation method should work, so long as the external address is
used consistently in the config files on both the FreeSwitch and
OpenSim sides I think.

Make sure your firewall ports for H.323 call initiation and for the
or used for the type of call made is also open.. that's covered
already in the Freeswitch wiki page firewall section. Its
configurable. Basically open ports 1720 and 5060, and maybe 50505
must be open for listening for the default setup indicated in
OpenSim.ini (for 0.7.1 dev master its in  OpenSimDefaults.ini and
must be copied to OpenSim.ini remember. Dynamically assigned ports
are used for specific call traffic. The usual H.323 and SIP traffic
dynamic port handling on modern firewalls usually enable this.

I added some more notes on the wiki for advanced users who want to
change the behaviour when joining calls, single user on hold music
turn off etc. We turn all that off in the freeswitch config file for our usage.

Ok, the reason I am asking is because we have Windows systems with public IP
that work fine.

However, now I am trying to create a working Amazon EC2 instance and cannot
decide if I have problems because Amazon instances are behind NAT or because
I am using Linux.

But I will do some further testing based on your notes below and let you
know.

Olli

Aah, meant to add to my previous email...

I was under understanding that OpenSim and Freeswitch communicate directly
as well as with the client software. Hence if you behind a NAT the following
will happen:

- If you put the public IP address to the config files OpenSim and
Freeswitch cannot communicate
- If you put the private IP address to the config files Freeswitch and the
client software cannot communicate

But maybe I am wrong?

Sorry not seen an error trace like this before. But would definitely say it
is something to do with line:

"returning empty as it's for another context"

Also the following line in your client output looks suspicious:

"2010-11-20T19:13:06Z INFO: LLVoiceClient::sessionAddedEvent: Could not
generate caller id from uri, using hash of uri"

Unfortunately I have never used imprudence.

Sorry can't be more help at this time.

Hi Olli,
I have an OpenSim instance with FreeSwitch running on Amazon EC2

Ok, the reason I am asking is because we have Windows systems with public IP
that work fine.

However, now I am trying to create a working Amazon EC2 instance and cannot
decide if I have problems because Amazon instances are behind NAT or because
I am using Linux.

But I will do some further testing based on your notes below and let you
know.

Regards,

Olli

I cannot be sure on that Olli.  But any port forwarding or translation
method should work, so long as the external address is used consistently in
the config files on both the FreeSwitch and OpenSim sides I think.

Make sure your firewall ports for H.323 call initiation and for the or used
for the type of call made is also open.. that's covered already in the
Freeswitch wiki page firewall section. Its configurable. Basically open
ports 1720 and 5060, and maybe 50505 must be open for listening for the
default setup indicated in OpenSim.ini (for 0.7.1 dev master its in
OpenSimDefaults.ini and must be copied to OpenSim.ini remember. Dynamically
assigned ports are used for specific call traffic. The usual H.323 and SIP
traffic dynamic port handling on modern firewalls usually enable this.

I added some more notes on the wiki for advanced users who want to change
the behaviour when joining calls, single user on hold music turn off etc. We
turn all that off in the freeswitch config file for our usage.
